Nearly 30 years ago my wife and I started farming on a century-old farmstead that once served the green grocers of Milwaukee. Built by German immigrants who arrived in 1858, the men built the stone homes and nearby church with the skills they brought from the old country. It took several years to build the barn and the house, during which time the children and the women lived in apartments not far from Bradley Tech. When the building was done, the famillies reunited and worked together in clearning the land to make more farmland for growing vegetables, crops, and the care of their horses, hogs, chickens and cows.
